Private speedboat cutting across the brown water of the Saigon River in the morning

Private · From Ho Chi Minh City

The Mekong in a day, without sharing a seat

Private day trips and one-night escapes from Ho Chi Minh City where the comfort is in the getting there: a speedboat or a car for your party only, a sampan on the small canals, lunch set for you alone, and a guide who works to your clock. Every trip is quoted with honest door-to-door times.

Where to start

Three ways in

People reach this page with one of three questions. Some already know they want a private day on the river and are comparing products. Some have a place name from a guidebook and want to know whether it is worth the drive. Some are working out whether a day in the delta fits at all: a cruise ship with an all-aboard time, a flight that leaves at nine in the evening, a meeting the day after. Each question has its own door.

01

Choose a trip

Four private products: a speedboat day, a car day to Ben Tre or Cai Be, one night in Can Tho with the dawn market by private boat, and a port day for cruise passengers. See the trips.

02

Understand a place

Ben Tre, Cai Be, Can Tho and the Saigon River route: what each one is today, how long it takes to reach, and when to leave it out. See the places.

03

Work out the timing

Speedboat against private car, door to door, with the tide and the traffic counted. And a planner for cruise passengers with a fixed all-aboard time. Compare the two.

What you pay for

Where the luxury actually is

The Mekong Delta has very few high-end places to stay within day-trip range of Saigon, and a day trip does not need one. What separates a comfortable delta day from a tiring one is almost entirely transport and privacy. The coach tour leaves at a fixed hour, collects from several hotels, stops at the same orchard as every other coach and returns when the slowest group is ready. The private version leaves when you are ready, goes straight to a pier or the expressway, and changes plan when the light or the weather does.

So we sell the parts that make the difference, and we say exactly what each one is:

  • The private speedboat. Chartered for your party from a pier in central Saigon. On the published timetables we have checked, a speedboat reaches the canals at the upper edge of the delta in about an hour and twenty minutes, with no traffic at all.
  • The private car or van. A sedan, a 7-seat car or a converted van with fewer, larger seats, for your party only. It takes you to the big Mekong branches at Ben Tre, My Tho or Cai Be, which the speedboat cannot reach in a day.
  • The private sampan. A small rowed or motor boat on the narrow canals under water-coconut palms, for you and your guide only. No queue at the jetty, no waiting for a full boat.
  • The private lunch. A table set for your party, at a garden or riverside house we choose for the route, with the menu agreed in advance and dietary needs handled before the day.
  • The private guide. English-speaking, with you from hotel door to hotel door, working to your timing rather than to a group's.

Honest door-to-door times

Every quote we send shows the door-to-door time of the day: from the moment you leave the hotel lobby to the moment you are back. The table below gives the planning figures we start from. Real times move with city traffic, the tide and the weather, and the quote for your date says which of those matter.

Prices are quoted per party once we know the date, how many are travelling and where you are staying or docking. The pricing page explains what moves the number, starting with how many hours the boat is chartered for. How to book covers the steps from the form to a confirmed day.

On a ship, or a tight schedule?

Two kinds of traveller come to us most often with a hard deadline. Cruise passengers have a port day with an all-aboard time that does not move. Business travellers have one free day between meetings, or a late flight out. Both need the same thing: a plan built backwards from the deadline, with the margin written down.

For cruise passengers, the shore day planner explains how a delta day fits around a port call, and when it does not fit at all. Large ships usually berth at Phu My, a long drive from the city, and that changes the answer. Confirm your ship's timings before you send us anything; we plan from them, not from a typical day.

When to book someone else

  • Travellers who want two or more nights in the delta's resorts and lodges; our trips are day trips and single nights from Saigon
  • Anyone looking for the lowest price for a delta day; a shared coach tour costs a fraction of a private boat
  • Parties who cannot fit in one boat and one vehicle; private travel loses its point when it needs a convoy
  • Travellers who want an overnight cruise on the river; we do not sell cruises
  • Visitors set on seeing a floating market crowded with hundreds of trading boats; that market no longer exists, and we will not pretend it does

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is a day trip to the Mekong Delta from Saigon worth it?

Yes, if you accept what a day can reach. By speedboat you reach canals at the upper edge of the delta in about eighty minutes. By car you reach the big river at Ben Tre or Cai Be in about two hours. Can Tho is too far for a comfortable day and is better as a one-night trip.

What makes your trips luxury rather than standard?

The boat, the car, the sampan, the lunch and the guide are for your party only, and the day runs on your clock. We do not add shopping stops. Every quote lists door-to-door times and what is included line by line.

Why is there no price on the trip pages?

Because the largest cost is the boat or vehicle charter, and that depends on the date, the hours and the size of your party. The pricing page lists what moves the total and some published third-party prices for comparison.

How do I get in touch?

Through the enquiry form, which sits at the foot of every page. Answers come by email: a short list of questions if your day has loose ends, otherwise a written plan with the times filled in.
