Cruise ship berthed at a container port with cranes behind

Planning a shore day to the delta

A Mekong day from a cruise ship is a sum: hours in port, minus the road or river time each way, minus a safety margin, leaves the time you actually spend in the delta. This page shows how to do that sum for your ship, and when the answer says stay in the city.

Before anything

Start with your ship's timings

Before reading anything else, find three facts from your cruise line: where the ship berths for Ho Chi Minh City, the time you can go ashore, and the all-aboard time. Cruise lines can change these after you book, so check again a few weeks before the voyage and again on board. Everything below depends on them, and no general advice replaces them.

Confirm first

Confirm your ship's berth, arrival and all-aboard times with your cruise line. We plan from your ship's real times, never from a typical port day.

Where ships berth

Large ocean ships usually berth at Phu My, a container port south-east of the city. A port guide that checks its information regularly puts the drive from Phu My to central Saigon at 1.5 to 2 hours or more each way. A port aggregator also lists two river ports used by some ships: Port Saigon, about 2 km from the centre, and Hiep Phuoc, about 16 km away.

BerthWho uses itWhat it means for a delta day
Phu MyLarge ocean shipsLong road each way; the delta is further than the city; only long calls work
River berth near the centreSome shipsA speedboat day is possible, as from a city hotel
Hiep PhuocSome shipsRoad time to the pier or the delta worked out for your day

Port details change and we do not rely on general lists. Your cruise line's information for your call is what counts.

The sum, step by step

  1. Take the all-aboard time and subtract our margin of at least one hour. That is when you must be at the gangway.
  2. Subtract the road or river time back from the delta. That is the latest moment you leave the delta.
  3. From the time you can be ashore, add time to clear the port and meet the guide, then the road or river time out.
  4. The gap between the two is your time in the delta.
  5. If it is under about three hours, the delta is not worth the road. Spend the day in Saigon instead.

For a ship at a city berth, the river leg is about eighty minutes each way on published speedboat timetables, so a call of eight or nine hours can leave around four hours in the delta canals. For a ship at Phu My, the road legs are long, and a call needs to be about ten hours or more before the sum works. We do the sum for your exact date before you pay anything.

07:00–17:00Phu MyPossible on a long call; the delta time is shorter and confirmed for your date

These examples are illustrative. The times are not taken from any particular ship, and your real answer comes from your ship's real timings.

What the delta part looks like

From a city berth, the day follows our speedboat day from a hotel, with the speedboat to the upper-delta canals, a private sampan, a village and orchard, and a private lunch, then back. From Phu My, the private car goes to the My Tho side of the Tien River and over to Thoi Son islet, the nearest point on the big river, where a private sampan runs along a canal under water-coconut palms past honey farms and coconut-candy workshops.

Both are described on the Mekong port day page, with prices on request. The places themselves are on the Saigon River route and Ben Tre, which faces Thoi Son across the river.

Independent tour or the ship's excursion

Be honest with yourself about risk. Check what your cruise line says about guests on independent tours and late return, and do not assume the ship will wait. Our plans keep at least an hour at the gangway and cut the delta time before they cut that margin. Even so, if being late is something you would worry about all day, the ship's own excursion is the calmer choice, and we would rather you took it.

What a private day gives you in return: a party of your own instead of a full coach, a sampan on a canal the large groups cannot use, and a guide who watches your clock rather than the group's.

Checklist for the day

  • Your cruise card and the passport details we asked for; port guides note these are needed in advance
  • A day bag only, especially on the speedboat
  • Sun hat, sunscreen and a light rain layer; the delta is hot all year
  • A little Vietnamese dong for drinks or a purchase; everything on the plan is paid
  • The printed plan, which shows the time we will have you back at the gangway

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is a Mekong Delta shore excursion possible from Phu My?

On a long call, yes, with less delta time than from a city berth. On a call of under about ten hours, the road takes too much of the day and we suggest the city instead.

How far is Phu My from Ho Chi Minh City?

A port guide puts the drive at 1.5 to 2 hours or more each way to the centre, depending on traffic. The delta is further.

Will the ship wait if we are late?

Do not assume so. Check your cruise line's rules for independent tours. Our plans keep at least an hour of margin at the gangway.

What do you need from us to plan the day?

The ship's name, the date, the berth, the time you can go ashore and the all-aboard time, plus how many are travelling. Passport details follow at confirmation.
