The Saigon River: the way out by water

The fastest way out of Ho Chi Minh City is not a road. From a pier in the centre, a speedboat runs down the Saigon River and into the canals beyond the city, reaching the upper edge of the delta in about eighty minutes. This page describes the route, the tide and the weather that govern it.

What the route actually is

The Saigon River is a working river. It bends through the city in long loops, and on any morning it carries barges of sand and containers, small ferries, tugs and the occasional river cruise ship. From the water you see the city differently: the old waterfront on one side, the new towers of Thu Thiem on the other, then warehouses, shipyards and finally green banks.

Beyond the city, the speedboat turns off the main river into narrower waterways and slows down as houses and fish ponds come close to the bank. The operators who publish their timetables describe this part as narrow canals, and give about one hour and twenty minutes from the central pier to the delta canals in the Thu Thua area. That is the upper edge of the delta, in what was Long An province: flatter, quieter and less visited than the big river, with water-coconut palms along the canals and rice and orchards behind them.

It is important to be clear about what this route does not reach. It does not take you to the wide Tien River at My Tho, Ben Tre or Cai Be in a comfortable day and back; we have not found a published same-day speedboat schedule to those places that we could stand behind. The route's value is that it gets you out of the city and into the delta without spending an hour or more in city traffic.

A taste first: the Saigon Water Bus

If you want to see the river from the water before committing a day to it, the public Saigon Water Bus runs from the Bach Dang station in the centre. The route is about 11 km with six stations: Bach Dang, Thu Thiem, Binh An, Thanh Da, Hiep Binh Chanh and Linh Dong. Each boat takes 66 passengers, and a one-way ticket was VND 15,000 at the end of 2025. It runs upriver, away from the delta, but it shows you the city's waterfront for the price of a coffee.

Other directions from the same pier

The river leads to more than the delta. Upstream lies Cu Chi, which published speedboat trips reach in a six-hour round trip. Downstream, towards the sea, are the Can Gio mangroves, sold as an eight-hour speedboat day. Neither is a Mekong trip and we do not sell them; we mention them because the same tide and weather rules apply, and because some travellers combine one of them with a delta day on a different date.

Some cruise ships also use the river. A port guide lists a river port called Port Saigon about 2 km from the centre and another at Hiep Phuoc about 16 km away, alongside the large-ship berth at Phu My further out. Which one your ship uses decides whether a speedboat day is possible on your port call; the shore day planner explains how.

Tide and water

The Saigon River is tidal, rising and falling every day, and the canals off it follow. For a speedboat that matters in two ways. At very high water, low bridges over small canals can leave too little clearance for a boat to pass. At very low water, a narrow canal can be too shallow. The route is planned around both.

The highest tides in Ho Chi Minh City usually come in the tenth lunar month, which falls around November. At the Phu An station on the Saigon River the water reached 1.47 m at seven in the morning on 30 November 2025, close to the second alert level. On days like that, riverside streets flood, and a boat schedule needs to be set with the tide table in hand. We do this for every speedboat day and tell you in the plan when the tide has moved the departure.

Les Rives is a Saigon speedboat operator that publishes its own Mekong timetable and prices online. We quote its figures as a public reference point for what a speedboat day looks like. We have no arrangement with Les Rives, and its shared tours are a different product from the private charters described here.

When to skip it

  • If you get seasick or dislike spray and wind; the car is the better way out
  • If your picture of the Mekong is the wide river with coconut islands; this route does not reach it
  • On a day of strong wind or storms; the boat will not run and the car version is the plan
  • If you are carrying suitcases; speedboats are for day bags

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

How long does a speedboat take from Saigon to the Mekong Delta?

About one hour and twenty minutes to the canals of the upper delta in the Thu Thua area, on published timetables. Reaching the big river at My Tho or Ben Tre by boat in a day is a different matter, and we do not sell it.

Where do speedboats leave from?

From Bach Dang pier on the Saigon River in the city centre, a few minutes from the central hotels.

Does the tide affect the trip?

Yes. Very high water can block low bridges on small canals, and very low water can make them too shallow. We set the departure around the tide for your date.

Can we see the river without a full day?

Yes. The public Saigon Water Bus runs about 11 km upriver from Bach Dang for VND 15,000 one way, published at the end of 2025.
