Private car day to Ben Tre or Cai Be

A private car or van takes your party from the hotel door to the wide Mekong branches in about two hours. You choose the side of the river: the coconut canals of Ben Tre, or the boat traffic, family workshops and old wooden houses of Cai Be. A private sampan, a private lunch and a guide fill the day.

Who this day is for

This is the day for travellers who want the delta of the photographs: a wide brown river, islands of coconut palms, narrow canals running off it, and family workshops on the banks. That landscape starts at the Tien River, the northern Mekong branch, and the fastest comfortable way to reach it from Saigon in a day is a private vehicle on the expressway.

You spend about four hours of the day in the car, split into two runs of about two hours. That is the honest cost of this trip, and we do not hide it. In exchange you travel door to door with nobody else, you stop when you want, and the day starts when you are ready rather than when the last hotel on a coach route has been collected. It suits older travellers, families with children who nap in a car more easily than on a boat, and anyone who prefers air conditioning to spray.

You choose one side of the river for the day. Ben Tre is quieter and greener, with canals that run deep into coconut groves. Cai Be has more river traffic, the remains of a floating market, and an old village of wooden houses. We will help you choose when you send the form; the notes below show what each side gives.

Road times, honestly

LegDistancePlanning timeWhat moves it

Central Saigon to Cai BeAbout 108 kmAbout 2–2.5 hLeaving the city; holiday traffic on the expressway
Central Saigon to My ThoAbout 71 kmAbout 1.5–2 hUsed when the day adds Thoi Son islet

The distances are road kilometres from central Saigon. The times are ranges that include getting out of the city, which is the slowest part of every drive south. The road beyond the city is expressway: the Ho Chi Minh City to Trung Luong section opened in 2010, and the Trung Luong to My Thuan section continues towards Cai Be. On the Ben Tre side, a second Rach Mieu bridge opened to traffic on 19 August 2025, and the temporary ferry stopped the next day, so there is no longer a ferry queue on this route.

Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings and the days around public holidays and Tet are slower. When your date is one of those, the quote moves the return earlier or warns you that it will be later.

The day, in full

Day 1

Saigon to the Tien River and back by private car

The private sampan turning off the main river into a canal too narrow for tour boats

The car is at your hotel at half past seven. The first stretch is the slow part: getting out of the city to the start of the expressway. After that the road runs south through flat country, and the guide uses the drive to explain how the day will run, what is in season in the orchards and which canal the tide suits that morning.

On the Ben Tre side you cross the Tien River on the Rach Mieu bridges, then leave the car at a jetty where a private sampan waits. The canals here run deep into coconut groves, and the boat is small enough to go where the larger tour boats cannot. You stop at a workshop where coconut candy is cooked from coconut milk, malt and sugar, walk through an orchard, and finish at a garden house where lunch is set for your party. On the way back the car can turn off the bridge to Thoi Son islet for a second short boat ride on the My Tho side, or you can rest.

On the Cai Be side the morning is on a private boat on the open river, where cargo boats and ferries still work the water. The floating market here has faded to a few boats in the early morning, and we say so before you book. The boat stops at family workshops making coconut candy, puffed rice, rice wine and honey, then at Dong Hoa Hiep, a village of old wooden houses, before a private lunch. The afternoon is a slower sampan on a side canal or an orchard, then the car back to Saigon.

Ben Tre or Cai Be: which side

Ben Tre

Quieter, greener, coconut country

The former Ben Tre province, now part of Vinh Long province, is a group of islands between Mekong branches. Its canals are narrow and shaded, and the day is mostly small boats and garden paths. It is the gentler choice for older travellers and families, and the drive is a little shorter.

Cai Be

River traffic, workshops, old houses

Cai Be, now a ward of Dong Thap province, sits on the Tien River itself. The day has more open water and more to look at on the banks, plus Dong Hoa Hiep, where several houses date from the nineteenth century. The drive is a little longer each way.

Each side has its own page with seasons, costs on the ground and when to skip it: Ben Tre and Cai Be.

The vehicle and the luggage

For one or two travellers we use a sedan; for three or four, a 7-seat car; for five to eight, a van fitted with fewer, larger seats, which in Vietnam is often called a limousine. That word also appears on shared buses between Saigon and the delta, so when we say limousine we mean a vehicle for your party only, and the quote names the class.

The car day has no luggage limit beyond the size of the vehicle, which makes it the right trip if you are checking out of a Saigon hotel and heading somewhere else afterwards. Tell us how many suitcases there are; we choose the vehicle around them, and the bags stay locked in the car while you are on the boat.

Who this day is NOT for

  • Travellers who dislike four hours in a car in one day; the speedboat day spends far less time in a vehicle
  • Anyone wanting a busy floating market; at Cai Be only a few trading boats remain early in the morning
  • Visitors who want both Ben Tre and Cai Be in one day; it can be done, but the day becomes mostly driving
  • Travellers on a Friday afternoon or before Tet who cannot accept a later return than planned

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Can we see both Ben Tre and Cai Be in one day?

It can be done, but we advise against it. The two sides are on different stretches of the river, and adding the second one turns the day into a driving tour. Choose one side and use the time on the water.

Is there still a floating market at Cai Be?

Only a few trading boats remain, early in the morning, and the press describes the market as faded. The boat traffic on the river is still worth seeing. For a floating market that still trades, Can Tho's Cai Rang at dawn is the one, and it needs an overnight.

Can we finish at the airport instead of the hotel?

Yes, if your flight leaves in the evening. Send the flight time; we set the return to leave a margin for the city traffic and tell you what that margin is.

Is the sampan suitable for someone with limited mobility?

Boarding means a step down from a jetty into a small boat, with help from the crew. Tell us about any mobility limits; we choose jetties with easier steps or replace the sampan with a garden walk.
