Afternoon rain clouds building over a Mekong canal

When to go, month by month

The delta can be visited all year, and a day or one night is less exposed to bad weather than a long trip. What changes through the year is how easy the boats are, how hot the middle of the day is, what is in the orchards and how high the tide rises.

The year at a glance

3 = easiest, 2 = good with some planning, 1 = hardest. Based on Can Tho's long-term rainfall and temperature averages and the published fruit season; any given week can differ.

In short: December to April is the dry season and the easiest time for boats, with the hottest weeks in March and April. May to August brings the orchard harvest and afternoon showers. June to October is the wettest stretch, September most of all, and October and November bring the highest tides.

What the seasons mean for each trip

Private speedboat day

Easiest from December to April. In the rainy months the boat leaves early and returns before the afternoon storms build. In October and November the tide table sets the departure. See the speedboat day.

Private car day to Ben Tre or Cai Be

Good all year; the least weather-sensitive trip. May to August is the time for orchards in full fruit. Around Tet the roads are busy and the plant nurseries at Cai Mon at their most colourful. See the car day.

Can Tho in one night

The dawn market runs all year. Dry-season mornings are clear and cool; wet-season mornings are often dry, with rain later. Peak tides in October and November can flood the riverfront streets for part of the day. See Can Tho in one night.

Mekong port day

If your cruise calls in the dry months, the weather is on your side. In the wet season the speedboat version carries more weather risk, and we may suggest the car version. See the shore day planner.

Tides

The rivers and canals around Saigon and the delta rise and fall with the tide every day. The highest tides of the year in Ho Chi Minh City usually come in the tenth lunar month, around November. In the 2025 flood season the government forecast peaks at Can Tho and My Thuan in mid-October and early November, tied to high tides, and advised residents to limit travel during the high-tide hours of about five to eight in the morning and four to seven in the evening.

For a day trip this matters mainly to the speedboat and the sampan. Very high water can block low bridges on small canals; very low water can leave them too shallow. Every plan we send is set against the tide table for your date.

Heat and mosquitoes

The delta is hot all year. Can Tho's average daily high is between about 30 and 34 °C in every month, and the record is 40 °C, in April. Our days put the boats in the morning and lunch in the shade, and the afternoon return comes before the hottest hour where we can.

Dengue fever in Vietnam peaks from June to October, and most cases are in the central and southern regions, according to the World Health Organization. The season overlaps the rains. Use repellent on the canals and in gardens, especially in the late afternoon, and cover arms and legs if you can.

Holidays

Tet, the Lunar New Year, falls in late January or February and is the busiest time on the roads out of Saigon, in both directions. Boats and vehicles are booked early and cost more, and some family businesses may close for a few days. If your trip falls in the week either side of Tet, send the form early and expect the plan to allow extra road time. Other public holidays and long weekends have a smaller version of the same effect.

The destination pages each have their own season notes, and the pricing page explains how dates move the price.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Which months suit a Mekong Delta day trip most?

December to February is the easiest: dry, the coolest weather of the year and calm water for boats. March and April are also dry but hot.

Can we go in the rainy season?

Yes. Mornings are often dry and the rain usually comes later in the day. The speedboat carries more weather risk; the car day is the least affected.

When is fruit season?

The orchards are at their fullest from May to August, with rambutan, durian, longan and mango in season.

Do tides affect a day trip?

They decide which canals a boat can use and when. The highest tides come around October and November; we set each plan against the tide table.
