Why Can Tho needs one night

Can Tho is about 171 km from central Saigon by road, three to three and a half hours each way in a private car. As a day trip that means seven hours on the road for a few hours in the city, and it still misses the one thing most people come for: the Cai Rang floating market, which is at its most active from about six to half past seven in the morning and thins out after eight. You cannot be there at six from Saigon without leaving at about two in the morning.

With one night, the arithmetic changes. You drive down at a civilised hour, spend the afternoon on the river or in the old house at Binh Thuy, sleep beside the Hau River, and are on your own boat at Cai Rang as the light comes up. By ten you are on the road back, and in Saigon in the early afternoon.

This is the trip for travellers who can spare exactly one night and want the delta's one surviving large floating market seen properly. It also fits business travellers with a free weekend day plus a night, and anyone flying on from Can Tho's own airport rather than back from Saigon.

What Cai Rang is today

Be clear about what you will see. Cai Rang's floating market culture was recognised as national intangible cultural heritage in 2016, but the market is much smaller than it was. Roads and bridges let traders move produce by truck, riverbank embankments have taken trading space, and a growing share of the boats are tourist boats. Published guides disagree on how many trading boats are left; all agree it is far fewer than at its peak.

What remains is still worth the early start: wholesale boats with a sample of their cargo hung from a pole, small boats selling coffee and noodle soup to the traders, and the market waking up in the low light. The private boat matters here. It leaves when we say, not when it is full, and it goes in among the trading boats before the bigger tour boats arrive, then slips into a side canal while they are still coming in.

Two days, in full

Day 1

Saigon to Can Tho by private car; afternoon on the river

The Binh Thuy house in the late-afternoon light

The car collects you at eight, after breakfast. The route is expressway almost all the way: south past Trung Luong, across the Tien River on the My Thuan 2 bridge, and on the My Thuan to Can Tho expressway that opened in December 2023. With one stop for coffee you reach Can Tho around half past eleven, in time for lunch at a table set for your party.

In the afternoon the guide takes you to the Binh Thuy ancient house, built in 1870 by the Duong family and used as a set for the film L'Amant; it reopens after the midday break at two. Later, a private boat on the Hau River at the hour the heat goes, or a walk on the Ninh Kieu riverfront, where the night market opens after four. Dinner is your choice; Can Tho's own dish is duck stewed in fermented tofu.

Day 2

Cai Rang at dawn by private boat, then back to Saigon

Six o'clock among the trading boats at Cai Rang

The guide meets you in the lobby at about a quarter past five, with coffee. The boat ride from the Ninh Kieu side to Cai Rang takes thirty to forty minutes, so you arrive around six, when the market is most active. Breakfast is noodle soup bought from a boat alongside, eaten on your own deck.

By half past seven the private boat turns into a smaller canal for a quieter half hour, then takes you back to the hotel for a shower and a proper breakfast. The car leaves at about ten and reaches central Saigon at about half past one, or takes you to the airport. If you are flying on from Can Tho instead, the airport is about nine kilometres from the centre.

Where you sleep

Can Tho has a handful of hotels at the upper end, and they suit different versions of this trip. We name them as public facts from their own websites and published press:

  • Nam Bo Boutique Hotel, on the Ninh Kieu pier in the centre: an all-suite hotel of seven suites, so it books up. Being on the pier makes the 05:15 start short. Its published rates run to 31 October 2026.
  • Victoria Can Tho Resort: a garden resort on the Hau River with a riverside pool. The hotel itself lists a Cai Rang floating market cruise.
  • Legacy Mekong, Can Tho, Autograph Collection: a private islet in the Hau River with 86 bungalows and pool villas, announced as part of Marriott's portfolio in December 2025. It opened in 2018 as Azerai Can Tho and left the Azerai brand in October 2024; guests reach it by a short boat ride from a mainland pavilion. Confirm the current name and services when you book, as the change is recent.

For a single night we usually suggest the centre, because it shortens both the evening walk and the dawn start. The islet makes sense if the hotel itself is part of the reason for going.

About these hotels

Every hotel mentioned here is described from its own website or from published trade press, read on the date shown under the section. A mention is information for choosing, not a sign of any agreement between us and the hotel. Room prices are the hotel's own on the day you book.

Fitting it around flights

SituationHow we plan it
Arriving in Saigon in the morningStart from the airport instead of a hotel; Can Tho by mid-afternoon
Flying out of Saigon on day 2Leave Can Tho by 10:00; airport drop for evening flights; an afternoon flight needs a very early return
Flying on from Can ThoCan Tho airport has domestic flights; we check the airline schedule for your date
Suitcases with youNo problem; they ride in the car and go to the hotel with you

Because this trip is by car both ways, luggage is not a constraint. That makes it the easiest of our trips to attach to the start or end of a longer journey in Vietnam: arrive in Saigon, go straight to the delta, come back and fly on.

Who this trip is NOT for

  • Travellers who cannot face a 05:15 start; the market is a dawn event and later boats see much less
  • Anyone expecting hundreds of trading boats; the market has shrunk and we will not describe it otherwise
  • Those who want two or three nights in the delta's resorts; this is a single night by design
  • Travellers flying out of Saigon on day 2 before about 17:00, unless they accept leaving Can Tho very early

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Can we do Can Tho as a day trip from Saigon?

It can be done, but we do not sell it. Seven hours in the car leaves little time in Can Tho, and you reach Cai Rang long after the market has thinned out.

Could we go one way by speedboat?

We do not offer it. We have not found a published speedboat schedule between Saigon and Can Tho that we could stand behind, so we plan this trip by car both ways.

Which hotel do you suggest for one night?

Usually a hotel in central Can Tho, because it shortens the dawn start. The islet hotel suits travellers for whom the hotel is part of the reason to go.

What if it rains at dawn?

Light rain does not stop the market or the boat, and the boat has cover. If a storm makes the river unsafe, the guide waits for it to pass or moves the boat ride later and explains what you will miss.
