Wooden cargo boats moored on the Tien River at Cai Be

Cai Be: the working river and its old houses

Cai Be sits on the Tien River itself, where cargo boats, ferries and fishing boats still work the water. Its floating market has faded, but the river, the family workshops on the banks and the nineteenth-century houses of Dong Hoa Hiep make it a full day from Saigon.

What Cai Be actually is

Cai Be is a river town. Its waterfront faces the Tien River, the northern branch of the Mekong, and the river here is a working road: boats loaded with sand, rice, fruit and bricks, small ferries crossing, fishermen throwing nets. Seeing that traffic from a private boat is the core of a day here.

The floating market is the part to be honest about. It once traded from before dawn into the afternoon. Vietnamese press in 2024 described it as still existing but weakening, and noted that a conservation plan from 2017 had done little to stop it. A private publisher describes it in 2026 as nearly gone. What you see today is a handful of boats in the early morning, then mostly tour boats. We do not sell a Cai Be day on the strength of its market.

What remains strong is the life along the banks. Family workshops make coconut candy, puffed rice, rice wine and honey, and many of them welcome visitors. Some are well-worn stops on the coach circuit; others are simply family businesses. The private boat lets the guide choose.

Since 2025 Cai Be is a ward of Dong Thap province, which took in the former Tien Giang province. The town name is unchanged.

Dong Hoa Hiep: the old houses

The reason to choose Cai Be over Ben Tre is Dong Hoa Hiep, a village of old houses a short way from the river. It was recognised as a national historic relic in 2017. Two houses are usually visited: the house of Tran Tuan Kiet, built around 1838 entirely of wood, with a yin-yang tiled roof and finely carved beams; and the house of Phan Van Duc, built from 1850, mixing Asian and European styles. Both were restored with help from JICA, the Japanese development agency.

These are family homes, not museums. Visits are arranged with the owners, the rooms are dim and cool, and the families often serve tea. Shoes come off at the door. An hour is enough for two houses at an easy pace.

How long to give it

A day. A private day gives you about four and a half to five hours on the ground: the river by private boat in the morning, the workshops, Dong Hoa Hiep, lunch and a slower afternoon on a side canal. A night is not needed for what we show, and we do not sell one.

Across the river is Vinh Long, linked to the Cai Be side by the My Thuan bridge, which opened in 2000. The An Binh islet, more than 60 square kilometres of orchards and canals between the Tien and Co Chien rivers, lies opposite Vinh Long. It is a good area to explore over several days; on a single day from Saigon it is one place too many. Our private car day keeps to the Cai Be side.

When to go

MonthsWhat it is likeFor a day trip
December to AprilDry; river calm; hot by March and AprilEasiest time; early starts in the hot months
May to AugustRains begin; fruit seasonOrchards at their fullest; afternoon showers
September to NovemberSeptember wettest, drying in November; high waterPossible; the river is high and fast, plans set around storms

The dry months are easiest for boats on the open river. The when to go page covers the rains, the heat and the tides in more detail.

Getting there

By road from Saigon, the expressway runs south through Trung Luong and on towards My Thuan; Cai Be is about 108 km from the centre, two to two and a half hours by private car. The slow part is leaving the city, and Friday afternoons and holidays add time. Vietnamese press puts the Dong Hoa Hiep village about 110 km from Ho Chi Minh City.

There is no speedboat route from Saigon to Cai Be that returns the same day, on anything we have seen published. A private day differs from a shared one mainly in the hour you leave and the boat you board at the other end.

Costs on the ground

Few prices for Cai Be boats are published, and those that are tend to be years old. As a sense of scale, a private boat for a short crossing between My Tho and Thoi Son was listed at VND 300,000–350,000 in 2021–2023. Workshop products such as coconut candy and puffed rice are sold by the bag at modest prices. The old houses are family homes; on our trips the visit is arranged and paid in advance, and nobody will ask you for money at the door.

When to skip it

  • If the floating market is the main reason; it has faded to a few boats
  • If you want the quietest canals; Ben Tre's inner canals are calmer
  • If you have less than a full day; the drive is a little longer each way than to Ben Tre
  • If old houses and workshops interest you less than water and gardens

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is the Cai Be floating market still worth seeing?

Not as a reason to go. A few trading boats remain early in the morning. The river traffic is still interesting; for a market that trades every morning, go to Cai Rang in Can Tho with an overnight.

How old are the houses at Dong Hoa Hiep?

The two usually visited date from around 1838 and from 1850. The village was recognised as a national historic relic in 2017.

Which province is Cai Be in now?

Dong Thap. The former Tien Giang province, which included Cai Be and My Tho, became part of Dong Thap in 2025.

Can we combine Cai Be and Ben Tre?

It is possible but turns the day into a driving tour. Choose one side and spend the time on the water.
