Speedboat on a canal and a private car on a delta road, side by side

Plan · Getting there

Speedboat or car: door to door, honestly

The two ways out of Saigon to the delta trade different things. The speedboat avoids the traffic but reaches only the upper edge of the delta. The car reaches the big river but spends about four hours on the road. Here are the real times, the limits of each and the cases where each one is the wrong choice.

Answer

The short answer

Take the speedboat if you want the least time in a vehicle, you travel light, you are comfortable stepping between a pontoon and a moving boat, and the quieter canals of the upper delta are enough. Take the car if you want the wide Mekong branches at Ben Tre or Cai Be, if anyone in the party finds boats or steps difficult, if you have suitcases, or if the weather is poor. If you want both, there is a version that goes out by boat and comes back by car.

The speedboat time is from a published operator timetable. The road distances are from OpenStreetMap routing from central Saigon, and the times are ranges that include leaving the city. Neither is a promise for a particular day: tides move the boat and traffic moves the car, and your plan gives the figures for your date.

What moves the speedboat

  • Tide. The river and canals rise and fall with the tide every day. High water can leave too little room under low canal bridges; low water can leave a narrow canal too shallow. The highest tides of the year in Ho Chi Minh City usually come in the tenth lunar month, around November.
  • Wind and storms. Light rain is fine. Strong wind or a storm makes a small open boat unsafe, and the trip moves to the car or another date. June to October are the wettest months, September most of all.
  • River traffic. Barges and ferries slow the boat in the busy stretch through the city, especially in the morning.
  • Your hotel. From the central wards the pier is close. From an outer district, add the drive.

What moves the car

  • Leaving the city. This is the slowest and least predictable part of every drive south. A 07:00 start is usually faster than 08:30.
  • Day of the week. Friday afternoons out and Sunday evenings back are slower; so are the days around public holidays and Tet.
  • The bridges. The second Rach Mieu bridge opened in August 2025 and the ferry stopped, so the crossing to Ben Tre no longer has a ferry queue. The expressway to Can Tho, which crosses the Tien River on the My Thuan 2 bridge, opened in December 2023.
  • Roadworks. Expressway work continues across the delta; your plan mentions it if it affects your route.

Luggage

SpeedboatPrivate car
What fitsDay bags only: a small backpack or tote eachSuitcases, as many as the vehicle class allows
Checking out that daySuitcases go by car to the next hotel or the airport, quoted as a lineThey ride with you, locked in the car while you are on the water
WhyNo locker, the boat can be wet, and stepping onto a pontoon with a case is riskyNo limit beyond the vehicle

These are our rules, not published regulations. We set them because a speedboat day starts and ends with a step between a pontoon and a moving boat, and that step is where people slip.

Comfort, safety and who finds each one hard

The speedboat

You sit in the open air, with sun, wind and some spray. Everyone wears a life jacket for the whole time on the water; Vietnam requires the same on cross-river passenger boats from the moment they leave the pier until they dock, and we apply it to our boats. The ride is fast and can be bumpy where the river is choppy. Most people enjoy it; a few find the noise and motion tiring after an hour.

The car

You sit in air conditioning in a sedan, a 7-seat car or a van with large seats, for your party only. Two runs of about two hours each are the cost. It is the easier choice for older travellers, anyone with limited mobility, families with very young children who sleep in the car, and anyone who gets seasick.

The sampan, on both

Both versions include a private sampan on a small canal, and that means one step down from a jetty into a small boat. The crew helps everyone in. Tell us about mobility limits and we choose a jetty with easier steps.

The hybrid: boat out, car back

If you want the speedboat ride and the big river, the speedboat day has a version that combines both. You go out by speedboat to the upper-delta canals in the morning, then a private car takes you to Thoi Son islet on the Tien River, about one hour and twenty minutes by road on a published itinerary, and back to Saigon, about two hours. It is a long day of about ten hours. Details are on the private speedboat day page.

Decide in five steps

  1. Is anyone in the party unsteady on steps or in small boats? If yes, take the car.
  2. Are you checking out that day with suitcases? If yes, take the car, or send the cases separately.
  3. Is the wide Mekong the point of the day? If yes, take the car, or the boat-out, car-back version.
  4. Is the forecast poor, or is it the wet season, especially September? Keep the car version ready.
  5. Otherwise, take the speedboat and spend the day on the water instead of in traffic.

Then see the trips: the speedboat day, the car day to Ben Tre or Cai Be, or Can Tho in one night, which is by car both ways. The places are described on the Saigon River route, Ben Tre and Cai Be.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is the speedboat faster than driving to the Mekong Delta?

To the upper-delta canals, yes: about eighty minutes on the water with no traffic. To Ben Tre or Cai Be, the car is the practical way in a day, at about two hours each way.

Can we take luggage on the speedboat?

Day bags only. If you are checking out that day, the suitcases go by car to your next hotel or the airport, quoted separately.

What happens to a speedboat day in bad weather?

We check the forecast the day before. If wind or storms make the river unsafe, we switch to the car version, move the date or cancel on the terms in your written quote.

Which is better for older travellers?

Usually the car. Getting into and out of a speedboat at a pontoon takes balance, and the ride can be bumpy.
